Torturing our children one holiday at a time

We kicked off our holiday weekend by attending Oklahoma’s oldest rodeo right here in small town America.

Jack, at the last minute, decided he wanted to Mutton Bust – of course, he insisted on having a cowboy outfit as well…and being the great parents we are, we gave the boy what he wanted.Rodeo July 3 09 021 ps From Wikipedia: Mutton busting is an event held at rodeos similar to bull riding or bronc riding. In the event, a sheep will be caught and held still while a child is placed on top in a riding position. Once the child is seated atop the sheep, the people holding the sheep let go and the sheep then starts to run in an attempt to get the child off. Often small prizes or ribbons are given out to the child who can stay on the longest.

Sounds harmless enough…

or not.Rodeo July 3 09 068 ps After watching child after child after child give it a go, only to get trampled and come away screaming, I’ve decided that this could be considered legalized child abuse. Maybe Jack won’t want to participate again next year…maybe.

Of course the torturing of our children did not end there…

Even though our 4th of July was rainy and damp, the festivities went on as planned.4th of July  This is the one day of the year when daddy gets full reign, 4th of July 09 071 ps and mommy just has to sit back and pray that at the end of the evening her family will still have all of their limbs intact.4th of July 09 033 ps 4th of July 09 026 ps Despite a few minor mishaps, I am happy to report that we are all still standing.4th of July 09 013 ps

Awww...poor little cowboy! I'm glad the rain was at your house and not ours.

Glad you got that laundry done. :)

Oh My Gosh! I laughed so hard, I cried at that video. I knew he was okay because I watched it last after reading your post.... so it's okay that I laughed right?? LOL!

Poor little guy. I can just imagine all the kids getting trampled by sheep. Then he's holding a roman candle. My kids freak out at normal sparklers. You better watch out when he's a teenager!! No fear in that one :-)

ahhh, i would have been horrified if my kids wanted to try that, i'm a little (just a tad) over protective lol!

Bless his little heart! I love the rodeo and I will admit - the mutton busting is one of my favorite things to see!! My nephew did it and had a ball. He didn't seem to mind being trampled though. ;)
No way I'd ever let Jacob try. He thinks a hangnail is reason to go to the doctor.

I'm a bad as Amy because I am laughing so hard I am almost crying! Here in Northeast Ohio we don't have rodeos and so I haven't been able to torture my children in that particular way yet. lol!!!

I think its GREAT! But of course, I grew up in small-town OK, hitting rodeos and livestock shows. I made my debut at the age of 4, leading a pig on a leash in our local community fair. I didn't get trampled until my freshman hear of high school, by a huge heifer. Not a good way to start high school-as the girl with hoofprints up her back.

It looks like a fun 4th! You're a great Mom!

When can we move in? I showed Kaish the sheep movie and he just about died with excitement : ) Naji too! They are both looking over my shoulder as I write. Oh wait, now Kaish is on the floor and Naji is riding him while Kaish pretends to be a sheep. Such an exciting life I lead!

This post is hilarious! Your pictures are amazing...what kind of camera and lenses do you use?

Courtney - Thanks so much for the compliment! I use a Nikon D90 and unfortunately the only lens I possess is the one it came with, 18-105 mm.
